THE MANY HURDLES OF NURSING NIGERIA

We are currently in a race, not just a hundred meter dash, but a marathon, a marathon with hurdles. Hurdles that must be jumped over, overcomed and defeated.
If we refuse to jump our hurdles, we definitely will not make any progress. I believe it is time, though late, for us to begin to address certain annomalies that exist within our ranks. The hour has come, for those who sincerely love the profession, to sit down together and stretch forth their rods high up, against the many plagues that hungrily feed on us, as a professional body enclosed in this geographical area Nigeria.

Nursing Nigeria is still in its developmental stages. Though the nature of the country, the unstable nature of the country caused by our many unstable leaders has contributed in large doses to our own problems, so we still have a place to lay our accusations. I will not point fingers in this particular piece at any particular problem in Nursing Nigeria, what i will do instead, or try to do, is to hold you by the wrist, and drag you through the shores, so that you will see for your self the waves and observe the tides, and also look at the foot steps by the shores, the steps our predecessors left behind, we will study the depths of these steps, we will look at how frequent these steps appear on the sands, and judge by our selves, if these steps helped us, that is we, the nurses of today.
Right now, our only duty as a professional body is to jump over any kind of hurdle we may be seeing before us. Maybe we have delayed in jumping over important and strategic hurdles yesterday, and today we suffer from an accumulation of hurdles and our legs unfortunately are too short to overcome these stockpile of hurdles, we may need to borrow the legs of Bolt! Or we steal the shoes of Kipsang, so that we will be able to make progress powerful enough to catapult us to reasonable recognition with international standards.

Look around you my friends, what are the abnormal patterns you have yourself observed, as a citizen of our profession? What are the elements that stealthily loose the knots of unity that bind us togeteher? It could be greed or just the attitude that promotes carelessness, it could be a hundred other things that you may know your self, thank GOD the list is not an eternal one, it is possible to tick each box and say to ourselves “We completed it.”

I am not offering any solutions here, I am simply strolling by your side as we take a walk through the shore, and you observe the wave and the tide for yourself. My friends, it is wise to check yourself and be sure that you are not one of the many thorns in our flesh, ask yourself, if you are contributing in your own way to the progress of the profession. One man can’t do it. It is foolish to begin to think of the idea of a messiah, messiahs only excel when people are ready to move for reforms.

So, my friends, onward! As we march together, in one accord and make our Nigerian Nursing dream a reality.

Ayinla Daniel (R.N).
